One Island East, Commercial skyscraper in Quarry Bay, Hong Kong
One Island East is an office tower with 69 floors above ground, rising to approximately 298 meters in height. The exterior is covered entirely with floor-to-ceiling windows that allow light to flood the interior spaces.
One Island East was completed in March 2008, with tenants moving in from April of that year. Swire Properties assembled the site by merging the former Aik San Factory Building (built 1969) and Melbourne Industrial Building (built 1972), demolished in 2005, and transferred plot ratio from its Golf Course in Taikoo Shing, avoiding a land premium. Gammon Construction signed the HK$2.4 billion contract on 16 March 2006.
This tower stands where factories once operated, marking the transformation of this neighborhood from an industrial zone into a modern business district. The building is now central to daily work and commerce in the area.
One Island East is served by 28 high-speed passenger lifts, six double-deck shuttle lifts linking the main lobby (G–1/F) with the sky lobby on 37–38/F, one lift to the basement car park and two service lifts. Lifts to office floors use the Miconic 10 destination-dispatch system, except those to the sky lobby. Turnstiles guard the lift lobby for floors 45–54.
Just months after opening, the building was hit by Typhoon Kammuri in August 2008 and several window panes shattered. The glass fragments fell to the streets below, highlighting the force of tropical storms in this region.
