Liyuzui, Archaeological site in Liuzhou, China

Liyuzui is a Neolithic shell-mound site at the foot of Longtan Mountain in Longtan Park, Yufeng District, Liuzhou. It lies in a rock shelter on the south side of the hill called Liyuzui, about 10 m northeast of the Large Longtan. Excavations in 1980 exposed two superimposed cultural layers: a lower Mesolithic layer with human bones dated roughly 12,000–7,000 years ago and an upper Neolithic layer about 7,000 years old, both mixed with snail shells and sand-tempered pottery sherds.

The shell mound was found in January 1980, when staff of the Liuzhou Museum and the Guilin cultural relics committee were surveying the Leishan cliff carvings and noticed snail shells and sand-tempered pottery at a rock shelter on Longtan Mountain. Excavation followed from October to November 1980. In 2006 the site was listed in the sixth batch of national key cultural relics protection units.

The site's name, Liyuzui, means "carp mouth", after the small hill whose foot shelters the rock overhang where the deposit lies. Excavations in 1980 yielded sand-tempered pottery sherds mixed with large piles of snail shells, the refuse of meals eaten at the site. The human bones found here, about 12,000 to 7,000 years old, are known as the Dalongtan human remains.

The site lies at the foot of Longtan Mountain on the south side, about 10 metres northeast of the Big Dragon Pool, inside Longtan Park in Yufeng District. Access is through the park, so plan the visit around park opening hours rather than a separate ticket. The excavated area is small and partly overgrown; allow a short stop and combine it with the park's lake and karst hills.
