Ap Lei Chau Bridge, Vehicle and pedestrian bridge in Aberdeen district, Hong Kong
The Ap Lei Chau Bridge stretches 230 meters across Aberdeen Channel, connecting Aberdeen Island to Hong Kong Island with four traffic lanes.
The initial bridge construction in 1977 encountered technical difficulties when pre-stressed cantilevers failed to meet in the center, requiring emergency engineering solutions.
The bridge name originates from Ap Lei Chau island, which translates to Duck Tongue Island due to its geographical shape.
This infrastructure serves over 79,000 residents of Ap Lei Chau, providing the only direct road connection to Hong Kong Island.
The bridge construction costs reached 64 million Hong Kong dollars in 1980, marking a substantial infrastructure investment for that period.
