Changbai Waterfall, Alpine waterfall in Antu County, China
Changbai Waterfall is an alpine waterfall where water plunges 68 meters down from Heaven Lake, a volcanic crater lake at the border region. The cascade flows through the year and continues downward into the Songhua River system that eventually reaches distant lowlands.
The waterfall formed from volcanic activity that shaped the crater basin thousands of years ago. Over time this location became significant as a border zone where different regions met and water systems shaped the landscape.
The waterfall and its source hold spiritual meaning for Korean and Chinese communities who visit to collect water and connect with the landscape. Local people speak of the place as a meeting point between earth and sky where natural forces feel especially strong.
Visitors reach the waterfall through an enclosed glass path designed to protect from harsh winter weather during a 40-minute walk from the shuttle stop. Plan your visit during the warmer months if possible, as heavy snow and ice can make the route more difficult in winter.
The water flows year-round because geothermal heat beneath the surface keeps it from freezing during winter months. Colored algae thrive in the Julong Hot Springs below, painting the waters in unexpected hues that few visitors expect to see.
