Dongyue Temple, Wanrong, Taoist temple in Wanrong County, China.
Dongyue Temple in Wanrong is a narrow, multi-courtyard complex of 10,600 square metres facing south, with its tower set on the central axis at the front. Behind the Feiyun Tower stand the Wumen gate, the Xian and Xiang offering halls, the hall of Dongyue Dadi and the Yanwang hall. The Feiyun Tower is 23.19 m high, square in plan, three storeys with four eaves and a cross-gable roof, its 345 bracket sets densely packed.
The temple was founded before the Zhenguan era of the Tang, roughly when Wanquan County was established; its Tang and Song buildings were destroyed in wars. It was rebuilt between 1291 and 1297 (Zhiyuan 28 to Dade 1 of the Yuan) and repaired repeatedly under the Ming (Jingtai, Tianshun, Wanli) and the Qing. It was listed as a provincial protected site on 6 May 1957 and as a third-batch national key cultural relic on 13 January 1988 (No. 3-0129-3-077).
The main hall honours Huang Feihu, the Dongyue Emperor of Mount Tai, believed to judge life, death and good or evil. Above its door hangs a plaque with his 'Huíshēng Bǎoxùn' exhortation, which tells people not to exhaust power or fortune and not to bully the poor. The Xiangting stone pillars and slabs were donated by neighbouring villages, each with different stone, carving and calligraphy, all dated 1516.
The complex faces south on Xidajie in Jiedian town, next to the Wanrong county guesthouse, and covers 10,600 square metres in a long, narrow series of courtyards. The buildings stand in line along the central axis, with the Feiyun Tower first inside the gate, followed by the Wumen, Xian Hall, Xiang Pavilion, Dongyue Dadi Hall and Yanwang Hall. Look for the 1516 inscriptions on the sixteen stone columns of the Xiang Pavilion, each carved in a different hand.
The temple's Feiyun Tower served as a filming reference for the video game Black Myth: Wukong. The tower's 345 sets of wooden brackets are densely packed and varied, resembling swirling clouds, and its four inner columns rise 15.45 meters from the ground floor to the third-story beams.
