Former Fanling Magistracy, Former judicial building in Fanling, Hong Kong
The Former Fanling Magistracy at 302 Jockey Club Road is a judicial building with a central light well and an ornately designed staircase featuring decorative ironwork. The interior contains former courtrooms, converted holding cells, and modern facilities arranged across approximately 2,500 square meters of renovated space.
The magistracy operated from 1961 to 2002 and was the first judicial building established in the New Territories. During these four decades, it handled legal cases and administrative matters for the northern region of Hong Kong.
The building now serves as the Leadership Institute for the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, with the former Court No. 1 converted into a space for debates and public speaking events.
The building is easily accessible by public transportation and the spaces are designed to accommodate visitors with different mobility needs. The interior layout is straightforward, making it simple to explore all the main areas.
One original detention cell remains preserved in its authentic state, while the other three cells have been converted into multipurpose rooms for educational use. This contrast demonstrates how historic spaces can be both preserved and repurposed simultaneously.
