Jinyang Ancient City Relic Site, Archaeological site in Jinyuan District, Taiyuan, China.
Jinyang Ancient City Relic Site is an archaeological excavation in Taiyuan containing remnants of what was once a major urban settlement, including stone structures, ancient walls, and building foundations from different time periods. The site spreads across multiple acres and reveals through its various layers how the city developed and changed over centuries.
Jinyang was founded around 491 BC and served as a major administrative center for the ancient region, controlling economic and political affairs of the surrounding areas. Over more than a thousand years, the settlement evolved into a complex urban structure before gradually declining in importance.
The site reveals how residents lived and worked across different centuries, with pottery, tools, and household items documenting their daily routines. These discoveries show the social structures and craftsmanship that characterized life in this ancient settlement.
The site is best visited during daylight hours when the excavation areas and informational panels are clearly visible and the pathways are safe to walk. Comfortable shoes are recommended as you will be walking across open ground to explore the various layers and structures at your own pace.
The city walls at this location measure several meters thick and demonstrate sophisticated building techniques of ancient Chinese architecture that created strong and enduring structures. These massive walls stand as some of the most striking physical evidence of how ancient builders approached construction and fortification.
