Cao Cao Mausoleum, Cemetery in Anfeng, China
The site is a burial ground in Anfeng village that holds two underground chambers with stone inscriptions, grave goods, and weaponry from ancient times. The complex covers 74 hectares (183 acres) and forms one of the most important archaeological finds from the Three Kingdoms era in northern China.
The burial ground was uncovered in 2008 and attributed to an Eastern Han warlord who passed away in 220 at the age of 65. His political and military influence shaped the final phase of the imperial period and ushered in the following era of territorial division.
Stone carvings inside the burial chambers show scenes from daily life during the late Han period and offer insight into funeral customs of that era. Visitors today can view these preserved reliefs in the museum section and trace the handiwork of craftsmen from that time.
The site museum opened in April 2023 and presents finds from the excavations along with information about the discovery process. A visit includes both exhibition rooms and areas that provide insight into the work of archaeologists.
Excavations revealed three skeletons, including a man in his sixties and two women, along with 250 objects from the period. The finds provide rare physical evidence of burial practices during the late Han era in this region.
