Sai Wan Battery

Sai Wan Battery is a military fortification on the eastern coastline of Hong Kong Island, featuring multiple gun positions and defensive walls. The structures are arranged across the terrain to control views of the waters and approaches to the harbor.

The battery was built in 1903 and initially mounted large coastal guns for defending the harbor. During the 1920s, it was upgraded to serve as an anti-aircraft position, reflecting changing military needs of the time.

The site reflects Hong Kong's colonial military past and how defense strategies shifted over time to meet new threats. Walking through the grounds, you can observe how the structures changed to serve different purposes across generations.

The site is accessible via marked trails that lead through the surrounding park area to the fortification grounds. Bring water and sun protection, as exploration takes place entirely outdoors and can be quite exposed.

The structures reveal a rare blend of Victorian military design with later modifications for various weapons systems. This layering shows how military technology evolved and was adapted across several decades of use.
