Chudobínská borovice, Important tree in Dalečín, Czech Republic
Chudobínská borovice is a Scots pine standing on a rocky promontory along the left bank of the Vír reservoir, rising over 20 meters (65 feet) above the water during low levels. The tree grows within a protection zone around the water body and can be observed from designated viewpoints on the opposite shore.
The pine is roughly 350 years old and received its name from the village of Chudobín, which was flooded in the 1950s during the construction of the Vír dam. This event transformed it into a symbol of the region's submerged past.
The tree carries the name of the village of Chudobín, which disappeared underwater during the construction of the Vír dam, keeping that memory alive. Visitors today associate this place with the story of the submerged settlement.
The tree sits in a strictly protected zone around the reservoir and cannot be visited directly. Visitors should observe it from the viewpoints on the opposite shore and stay on designated paths.
The tree won the European Tree of the Year award in 2020 with nearly 47,000 votes, representing Czech environmental conservation efforts. This international recognition made it a symbol of regional nature protection work.
