Údolní nádrž Vír I, lake in the Czech Republic
Údolní nádrž Vír I is a reservoir in the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands, formed by damming the Svratka River and enclosed by forested slopes on both sides. It supplies drinking water to a large part of the surrounding region and also allows some recreational use along its shores.
The dam was built in the mid-20th century to secure a reliable water supply for the growing needs of the region. Its construction flooded the original valley of the Svratka, including parts of several small communities that once stood there.
The reservoir sits in a part of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands where forests meet quiet villages, and locals often come here for walks or cycling along the water's edge. The shoreline has a relaxed, everyday feel rather than that of a tourist destination.
The shoreline can be reached from several access points around the villages of Vír and Vítochov, and paths along the water are well suited for walking or cycling. Visiting in spring or summer gives the best conditions for enjoying the surroundings.
Because the reservoir is a primary source of drinking water, direct access to the water itself is restricted in many areas to protect its quality. This makes it a place where the view of the water is often more present than the water itself.
