Speyer Cathedral

The cathedral exhibits red sandstone walls, reaching 134 meters in length and 37 meters in width, with massive round arches and twin towers.

Conrad II initiated the construction in 1030 to establish a burial site for German rulers, with the building reaching completion in 1061.

The cathedral holds the remains of eight German emperors and four queens in its columned crypt, representing the largest Romanesque burial chamber in Europe.

Visitors can explore the cathedral daily from 9:00 to 19:00 between April and October, with reduced hours from November through March.

The building features the first architectural implementation of a system of blind arches and a circumferential gallery in medieval construction history.
