Villingen-Schwenningen, Urban district capital in Black Forest region, Germany

Villingen-Schwenningen is the largest city in the Schwarzwald-Baar district, sitting at 704 meters (2,310 feet) elevation and spreading over two areas divided by a plateau. The two town centers lie several kilometers apart, giving the municipality a wide footprint that takes in different landscape types.

The two towns merged in 1972 after centuries of separate existence and different paths of growth. Villingen formed as a fortified settlement in medieval times, while Schwenningen expanded during the 19th century through watchmaking.

The name reflects the merging of two separate towns that have been administered together since 1972, yet their position on either side of a plateau keeps them visibly different today. Visitors often notice how each half retains its own market square and character, with Villingen showing medieval roots and Schwenningen shaped by its industrial past.

The city is easy to reach by car or public transport, with bus lines linking both town centers directly. A good approach is to explore one center on foot first before moving to the other, as they are not within walking distance.

The source of the Neckar rises in a small park in Schwenningen, marking the start of one of Germany's longest rivers. In the other half, the Brigach flows past, so a single municipality holds two separate river systems running in opposite directions.
