Delmenhorst, Independent municipality in Lower Saxony, Germany
Delmenhorst is an independent city in Lower Saxony and lies ten kilometers west of Bremen on a flat plain seven meters above sea level. The urban area extends over 62 square kilometers between the Delme and Ochtum rivers.
The Count of Oldenburg acquired land near the Delme river in 1234 and had a castle built in 1247. From this medieval settlement, linoleum and spinning factories developed an industrial site during the 19th century revolution.
The Nordwolle Museum stands in the old factory halls and shows how cloth production shaped the town. Many street names and neighborhoods still recall the workers and entrepreneurs of that era.
The central train station offers regular connections to Bremen and Oldenburg with travel times under 15 minutes. The town is easy to explore on foot or by bicycle, as the terrain remains flat throughout.
The old linoleum factories and spinning mills stand today as witnesses to the industrial revolution that transformed a medieval settlement. Some of these buildings now house apartments, studios, or public facilities.
