Marbach am Neckar, Historic municipality in Baden-Württemberg, Germany
Marbach am Neckar is a municipality in Baden-Württemberg that sits on elevated ground roughly 20 kilometers (12 miles) north of Stuttgart, overlooking the Neckar River. Vineyards and fields surround the settlement, whose streets climb from the riverbank up to the hilltop.
Frankish settlers founded the settlement in the 8th century, and it received town rights in 1009. The place became part of the County of Württemberg in 1302 and remained a regional administrative and trade center for centuries.
The name comes from a Middle High German word meaning boundary, reflecting its position along an old administrative frontier. Half-timbered houses from the 16th and 17th centuries line the old center, where locals still live and run small shops.
Regional trains and suburban rail connect the place to Stuttgart in roughly 30 minutes. A walking route from the station leads through the lower town up to the center, where most services and shops are located.
The place is the birthplace of Friedrich Schiller, and his name appears on street signs, monuments, and institutions in nearly every quarter. The tower at the upper gate holds 95 steps that lead to a viewing platform overlooking the Neckar valley.
