Grenzach-Wyhlen, municipality in Baden-Württemberg, Germany
Grenzach-Wyhlen is a municipality in the Lörrach district of Baden-Württemberg, situated directly on the border with Switzerland. It consists of two recognizable parts with residential areas, local shops, and some industrial facilities along the Rhine.
Grenzach and Wyhlen were independent settlements for centuries before being merged in 1975 as part of a local government reform in Baden-Württemberg. Industrialization in the 19th and early 20th century shaped the appearance of both parts of the town.
The name of the municipality reflects its origin: Grenzach and Wyhlen were two separate villages that were merged in the 20th century. Walking through the streets today, you can still notice slightly different characters in the two parts of the town.
The municipality sits directly on the Swiss border and is easily reachable from the center of Lörrach. Having a vehicle makes it easier to move between the two parts of the town, as they are some distance apart.
The pharmaceutical company Roche operates one of its largest production sites in Germany here, which gives the town an unusual economic weight for its size. This facility is surprisingly visible to visitors, as its buildings make up a notable part of the local landscape.
