Waren, Spa town at Lake Müritz, Germany
Waren is a town in Mecklenburgische Seenplatte District, sitting on the northern shore of Lake Müritz and surrounded by several smaller bodies of water such as Kölpinsee and Tiefwarensee. The settlement spreads across gentle hills and forested areas, threaded with waterfront paths and boat docks along the shore.
The settlement was mentioned around 150 AD by Claudius Ptolemy under the name Virunum, and grew after receiving town rights in 1292 with the arrival of settlers from Westphalia. Later centuries brought trade and crafts to the lakeside, solidifying its position in northern Mecklenburg.
The name likely comes from Slavic roots, reflecting early settlement patterns in the region. Visitors today experience a spa town where water sports and lakeside relaxation shape daily life, with marinas defining much of the waterfront character.
The town sits roughly 40 kilometers west of Neubrandenburg at around 70 meters elevation and serves as the administrative seat for the Seenlandschaft Waren area. Visitors find access to the lakeshore at several points, and in summer many paths are easily walkable.
The municipal area ranks among the largest by size in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, with Herrensee lake at its center. This expanse resulted from the incorporation of many small villages and forest areas in recent decades.
