Marktschellenberg is a small municipality in the Berchtesgadener Land region situated at the foot of the Untersberg mountain. The center is formed by a modest square surrounded by traditional houses, local shops, and the Church of Saint Nicholas.
The settlement was first mentioned in 1112 and was already known for salt production at that time. A salt works operated from 1211 to 1805 and formed the economic foundation for residents, with salt boatmen transporting the commodity as far as Passau.
The village name reflects its deep roots in salt commerce that shaped life here for centuries. The Church of Saint Nicholas, patron saint of salt boatmen, remains at the heart of the community and serves as a physical reminder of the profession that once defined the place.
The village serves as a good starting point for hikes on the Untersberg mountain and to the Almbachklamm, a wild gorge with a rushing stream. Nearby is an ice cave that opens to visitors during summer months.
