Kneifelspitze

The Kneifelspitze is a mountain in the Northern Salzburg Alps that rises to approximately 1,190 meters and features steep slopes with marked paths. The landscape around the summit displays typical limestone formations with rocky sections and forested slopes below.

The mountain gained recognition in the 19th century when local shepherds established the first marked trails to the summit. These early paths formed the foundation for the hiking routes that visitors use today.

The nearby Maria Gern chapel serves as a gathering place where locals celebrate traditional mountain festivals, especially during summer months. This small church shapes the cultural rhythm of the region and draws visitors seeking to experience local customs.

The hike begins at the Maria Gern parking area and follows a marked route that takes about two and a half hours to complete. It is wise to bring sturdy footwear and plenty of water, as the path becomes steep and offers little shade.

From the summit plateau, visitors can observe the location where three mountain ranges meet: the Berchtesgaden Alps, the Northern Salzburg Alps, and the Untersberg group. This vantage point reveals how the ranges run adjacent to one another and display different geological features.
