Rot am See, municipality in Germany
Rot am See is a rural municipality in the Schwäbisch Hall district of Baden-Württemberg, made up of several villages. The settlements lie scattered across open farmland between the Brettach and Jagst river valleys.
The area was settled in the Middle Ages and shaped over the centuries by farming along the two river valleys. Over time, this led to a pattern of small, spread-out villages rather than a single central town.
The municipality is best reached by car, as the individual villages are far apart from one another. Once there, country lanes and footpaths make it easy to move between settlements on foot or by bike.
The name Rot am See refers to a small lake that no longer exists in its original form, having been drained over the centuries for farmland. This makes the place unusual: its name still points to a landscape that most visitors today would not notice.
