Schloss Hornberg

Schloss Hornberg is a castle perched on a ridge north of the Jagst River, displaying Renaissance features including a round tower and defensive walls. The site retains its medieval layout with moats, bridge crossing, and stone fortifications that reveal the historical defense system.

The castle was founded in 1216 by the noble Sulz family but underwent major reconstruction following damage during the Peasants' War of 1525. These rebuilding efforts allowed the fortress to retain its importance through the centuries.

The von Crailsheim family, who still own the fortress, occasionally open sections for events and special occasions, providing limited opportunities to explore the interior. Inquire beforehand about available visiting times or guided tours to plan your visit properly.

In 1647, the outer castle courtyard was transformed into a garden, giving the former military stronghold a new peaceful use. This shift from pure fortress to a space with civilian functions shows how the castle evolved beyond its defensive role.
