Burg Leofels, Medieval castle in Ilshofen, Germany.
Burg Leofels is a medieval castle near Ilshofen that rises on a promontory at about 405 meters above sea level. The structure features thick shield walls and a stone bridge that spans a wide ditch.
The castle was built between 1220 and 1250 during Emperor Frederick II's reign but appeared in documents as early as 1208. It later became the property of the von Vellberg family and was part of the regional power structure of that period.
The grounds host outdoor theater performances and concerts during summer, a tradition that began in 1979. This cultural use has become an important part of community life in the area.
The site is accessible via several hiking trails, including the Leofelser Blade loop from Ruppertshofen and longer routes along the Jagstaue river. Sturdy footwear is recommended since the paths cross uneven terrain and woodland areas.
The curtain wall was built around 1230 with massive stones and has remained largely intact to this day. This fortification is among the most substantial preserved medieval structures in the entire region.
