The church stands on the western shore of Königssee Lake with red domed roof and two onion domes reflecting in the clear mountain waters.

The Prince-Provosts of Berchtesgaden established the church in 1134, which underwent reconstruction in 1697 to incorporate the Baroque architectural style.

The church contains three apses with altars dedicated to Saint Bartholomew, Saint Catherine, and Saint James, featuring stucco work by Joseph Schmidt.

Visitors reach the church exclusively by boat services departing from Schönau am Königssee, with tickets available at the main dock station.

An annual pilgrimage starts from Maria Alm in Austria, crossing the Berchtesgaden Alps to reach the church on the Saturday following August 24.
