Oppau, Northern district in Ludwigshafen, Germany
Oppau is a northern district of Ludwigshafen composed of three parts: Oppau proper, Edigheim, and Pfingstweide situated together on the left bank of the Rhine. The district contains residential neighborhoods, industrial areas, and open spaces that develop along the river.
The district grew in the 1800s as an industrial area around the BASF factory and suffered the loss of about 559 people in a 1921 explosion. Reconstruction afterward shaped the area and its ongoing relationship with industry.
The area displays traces of its farming past in older buildings and traditional layouts that stand among modern industrial structures. This blend shapes how the place looks and reveals how the community adapted over time.
The L523 road connects the district to Ludwigshafen and Mannheim, while Stadtbahn line 3 and several bus routes offer public transportation. Visitors can explore the area easily on foot or using transit.
The area shifted to the left bank of the Rhine centuries ago through natural river changes, not by human design. This geographic shift enabled its development into the industrial and residential community seen today.
