Augsburg Zoo, Zoo in Augsburg, Germany
Augsburg Zoo spreads across 22 hectares (54 acres) and displays elephants, bears, primates, and many bird species in naturalistic enclosures. The grounds are divided into several themed areas that recreate different habitats from around the world.
The site opened its gates in 1937 and initially focused on simple cage housing. Toward the end of the 20th century, a comprehensive renovation began that replaced the old enclosures with spacious, animal-friendly facilities.
The name comes from a time when the institution focused mainly on native animals, though today visitors see species from all continents. Families often visit on weekends to watch the elephants and join scheduled feeding sessions.
Wheelchairs and strollers are available at no cost, while wagons can be rented for a fee of three euros. The paths are mostly paved and wind through shaded sections that are comfortable during summer visits.
Asian elephants live here in a large outdoor enclosure equipped with water features and sandy areas. Nearby, new sections for water buffaloes and collar bears were built only in recent years.
