Schlossberg

The Schlossberg is a forested peak above Freiburg that features walking routes through woods and open areas. The terrain offers multiple pathways with sections of shade and open ground, allowing visitors to choose their own pace and route.

The location held military importance from medieval times onward, with fortifications added in the 17th century to defend the city below. These defensive structures shaped the character of the hill and remain visible today.

The mountain serves as a gathering place where locals spend time outdoors, walking trails and enjoying meals with views over the city. Different areas attract various visitors throughout the day, from early morning joggers to evening strollers seeking fresh air.

The hill is accessible by cable car from the city center, making the ascent straightforward for most visitors. Multiple walking trails offer options for different fitness levels and available time.

Underground passages run through the hill, having served as air raid shelters during World War II and remaining largely hidden from casual visitors. These chambers are part of the site's layered past that most people overlook.
