Lichtenau is a town in the Paderborn region made up of 15 villages spread across a large area. The terrain sits on the Paderborn plateau with the Egge Mountains to the east, featuring height differences from about 180 to over 400 meters, with forests, open fields and meadows shaping the landscape.
The area around Lichtenau was settled about 5000 years ago, as evidenced by stone chamber graves and archaeological finds. The town took its current form in 1975 when territorial reform merged many small communities into a single administrative unit.
