Valznerweiher, Waterhole in eastern Nuremberg, Germany.
Valznerweiher is a still-water area in eastern Nuremberg made up of two connected ponds separated by a bridge. The smaller western pond is locally called the Small Valznerweiher, while the larger eastern one contains a small island with a restaurant on it.
The name comes from Herdegen Valzner, a banker from Prague who bought the pond in medieval times to supply water for an iron hammer mill he operated. The site was used industrially for a long time before it gradually became a place for leisure.
The Valznerweiher draws locals on warm days who come to sit on the grass or walk the paths around the water. The island restaurant in the middle of the larger pond is a regular meeting point for people from the surrounding neighborhoods.
Paths circle both ponds and are easy to walk on foot, making it a straightforward visit for most people. The island restaurant is reached by a small footbridge from the eastern bank.
A training ground for 1. FC Nürnberg opened right next to the site in 1966, which gives this water spot an unexpected connection to football. Many visitors who come to walk by the ponds are unaware that one of Germany's most storied clubs has trained just steps away.
