Heilig-Geist-Hospital

The Heilig-Geist-Hospital features three gables with four slender towers and a grand church hall constructed in northern German Brick Gothic architecture.

Established in 1227 and completed in 1286, the hospital served as a medical facility and shelter for travelers before transitioning into a retirement home during the Reformation.

The church hall contains important wall paintings from the early 14th century that document the religious and social narratives of medieval Lübeck.

Each resident of the retirement home occupies a six-square-meter private living space, maintaining the traditional layout from the 1970s renovation.

The building maintained its own brewery during medieval times, producing beer as a primary nutritional source for its inhabitants.
