Obelisk am Karolinenplatz

The black obelisk rises 29 meters from a three-tiered marble platform at the center of Karolinenplatz, featuring bronze plates and brick construction.

King Ludwig I commissioned architect Leo von Klenze to design this monument in 1833 to commemorate 30,000 Bavarian soldiers who died in Napoleon's Russian campaign.

The monument's bronze plates were cast from captured cannons of French, Russian, and Austrian armies, displaying inscriptions in German about the fallen soldiers.

The obelisk stands at an intersection of major streets including Brienner Straße and Barer Straße, with tram lines 27 and 28 circling the square.

The structure forms the central point of a roundabout designed to mirror Paris's Place de l'Étoile, making it the first radial square layout in Munich.
