State Museum of Egyptian Art, Egyptian art museum in Maxvorstadt, Germany
The State Museum of Egyptian Art is an underground museum in Munich's Kunstreal district that displays artworks and artifacts from Egypt across approximately 1,800 square meters. The exhibition spaces extend below ground level and showcase objects from different periods, ranging from early cultures through late Coptic times.
The museum was established in 1966 and is located in Munich's Kunstreal, an area dedicated to preserving artistic collections. It was developed to preserve and display works from all phases of Egyptian civilization, from the earliest cultures through the Greco-Roman period.
The collection displays works that reflect religious practices and daily life in ancient Egypt, from god statues to personal items found in tombs. You also see objects from Sudan and Coptic works that show how artistic traditions evolved over thousands of years.
Access is underground through a staircase that descends to the exhibition areas, so comfortable shoes are a good idea. The underground location means you can take your time exploring the spaces without rushing, though orientation may feel unfamiliar at first.
The underground architecture was inspired by temples and royal tombs, giving the place a special character. Natural light filters through a sunken courtyard into the exhibition areas, creating unexpected brightness below ground.
