Frohnhausen

Frohnhausen is a residential district in western Essen with a mixed structure of housing blocks, shops, and facilities for daily needs. The area features schools at different levels as well as vocational colleges, which underscore its role as a complete living community.

The district experienced rapid growth around 1800 as workers arrived to find employment at the nearby steel factory. This industrialization shaped the structure and development of the area that continues today.

The area had a mining operation as early as the 15th century, making it one of the oldest industrial sites in the region. Today only a few traces remain of this early industrial past, which existed long before steel production began.
