Schwanheim, Residential district in Frankfurt-West, Germany
Schwanheim is a district in southwestern Frankfurt along the northern border of the Main River. The neighborhood combines residential streets with green spaces and has a mix of older and modern buildings.
The place was first documented in 880 when St. Martin's Church was mentioned in official records. It grew from a small rural village into a residential district of Frankfurt over the following centuries.
The place takes its name from the swan and was long a quiet village with timber-framed houses and gardens. Today you still find old buildings next to newer homes, and residents use local squares for gathering and shopping.
Streetcars 12 and 19 run through Schwanheim and connect it to central Frankfurt. Multiple bus lines and night buses serve the district for travel at all times of day.
The Schwanheimer Düne is a nature reserve with rare inland dunes and walking paths through protected habitats. This natural area is surprisingly large and offers a quiet retreat in the middle of an urban setting.
