Rohsee, Archaeological lake in Frankfurt, Germany
The elongated Rohsee stretches from south-southwest to north-northeast, forming a forest pond that transitions into swamp habitat at Frankfurt's city forest edge.
Archaeological excavations near the lake's southern bank revealed Bronze Age settlements with pottery, grinding stones, and clay spoons from ancient civilizations.
The lake area functions as a protected Fauna-Flora-Habitat since 2003, maintaining 44 different plant species and black alder trees in its ecosystem.
Visitors need to plan their route carefully as the nearest public transportation stops are located two kilometers from the lake's woodland paths.
During low water periods, ancient black alder trees reveal their elevated root structures, which have regenerated through centuries of periodic logging.
