Schwanheimer Düne

The Schwanheimer Dune spans 58.5 hectares, featuring sand surfaces, pine trees, meadows, and five nutrient-poor ponds created through gravel extraction.

The inland dune formed 10,000 years ago when winds carried sand from the Main River, settling at its current location between 1882 and 1890.

The area received protection status in 1984 and gained European Union Flora-Fauna-Habitat designation in 2003, preserving its ecological importance.

Visitors can explore the nature reserve via a 400-meter wooden plank path made from chestnut wood, which protects sensitive lichen from foot traffic.

The dune hosts rare plant species including silver grass communities, farmer's mustard, and sand carnations, along with birds such as orioles and nightingales.
