Alte Burg Penzlin

Alte Burg Penzlin is a stone fortress from the Middle Ages with a Gothic vaulted knight's hall and a massive chimney in the kitchen. The thick walls and sturdy design were built to protect against attacks and serve as a seat of power.

The fortress was founded around 1220 as a seat for the Princes of Werle and later passed to the von Maltzahn family. It was damaged during the Thirty Years War, and those scars remain visible in the building today.

This fortress reflects how medieval rulers shaped the region and displayed their authority through architecture. Walking through its rooms shows visitors how power and defense were intertwined in daily life here.

The fortress is easier to visit during warmer months when visiting hours are more convenient and exploring is more comfortable. In colder seasons, hours are more limited and focused on weekends, so plan accordingly.
