Nonnenhof, Nature reserve in Neubrandenburg, Germany
Nonnenhof is a protected nature reserve located near Lake Lieps in the Neubrandenburg region. The landscape features swamp forests, reed beds, and extensive wetland areas where water and vegetation blend together naturally.
The area became a protected nature reserve in 1937 to safeguard its habitats. Nearly 50 years later it was recognized as a European Bird Protection Area, joining an international network of similar conservation sites.
The name Nonnenhof refers to Benedictine nuns who once lived and farmed this land centuries ago. Today visitors come to observe birds and walk through the wetland landscape, drawn by the peaceful surroundings and open water views.
The reserve is open for visitors to walk through, but motorized activities like boating and fishing are not permitted. Spring and autumn offer the best visiting conditions when migrating birds are most active and paths are easier to navigate.
During migration season, large flocks of geese gather here to rest and feed as they travel. This makes the area a vital stopover point on their journey between northern and southern regions.
