Kloster Wanzka, Medieval monastery in Wanzka, Germany.
Kloster Wanzka is a former Cistercian monastery located on a small peninsula in Lake Wanzka between Neustrelitz and Neubrandenburg. The monastery church and gate building are the most significant structures that remain from the original complex.
The monastery was founded between 1275 and 1283 and received official confirmation from Margrave Albert III of Brandenburg in 1290. These early documents secured its legal status and economic foundation within the region.
The monastery functioned as a refuge for unmarried daughters of regional noble families who lived a religious life there. This role shaped the place over centuries as an important spiritual center for the region's female aristocracy.
The site is best reached from the nearby towns of Neustrelitz or Neubrandenburg, both offering good connections. The area surrounding the monastery is very quiet and good for walking, especially in summer when the lake setting is most pleasant.
A remarkable seal from 1330 depicts the coronation of Mary and bears an inscription naming the monastery. This rare wax seal shows the craftsmanship and religious importance the place held during medieval times.
