Botanischer Garten Marburg, Botanical garden in Marburg, Germany
Botanischer Garten Marburg is a university botanical garden on the Lahnberge hills above the city of Marburg, in central Germany. It includes sections for alpine plants, medicinal herbs, and an arboretum, along with several greenhouses that shelter tropical and subtropical species.
The university's first botanical garden was created in 1810 in the center of Marburg. The current site on the Lahnberge was developed between 1961 and 1977 and opened to mark the university's 450th anniversary.
The garden is closely tied to Philipps University and serves as an outdoor classroom where students and researchers work alongside general visitors. The systematic section arranges plants by biological family, making it easy to see how closely related species look side by side.
The garden sits on a hillside, so expect some uphill stretches and wear comfortable shoes. Most outdoor areas and the greenhouses are open throughout the year, though individual sections may close at certain times.
Bronze Age burial mounds are scattered across the grounds and can be spotted while walking among the plants. One of the greenhouses turns into a butterfly habitat from May through October, with free-flying species filling the space.
