Affolderner See, reservoir
Affolderner See is a large reservoir in Edertal, Germany, surrounded by forests, gentle hills, and open fields. The water body stretches across a significant area with flat walking paths along the shoreline suitable for families and visitors of all ages.
The reservoir was created in 1929 when a dam was built, and has been expanded twice since, notably in 1972 and 1998. The dam, standing about 11 meters tall and nearly half a kilometer long, holds over seven million cubic meters of water for water management, power generation, and flood control.
The reservoir takes its name from the nearby village of Affoldern and has become woven into local life over the decades. Weekends bring families and friends to walk the shoreline, fish, or sit by the water, making it a central gathering place for the region.
The reservoir is easily accessible with well-marked walking paths along the shore and information signs at key points. Visitors will find picnic areas, parking, and benches positioned throughout for comfortable visits.
In the nearby town of Affoldern stands an unusual building shaped so that it appears everything inside is upside down, called the 'Crazy House' by locals. Many visitors overlook this quirky landmark while focusing on the water, yet it offers a fun detour in the area.
