Waldecker Bergbahn, Aerial lift in Waldeck, Germany
The Waldecker Bergbahn is a gondola lift in Waldeck, Hesse, linking the Edersee lakeside promenade to the hilltop town above. The line runs across a wooded slope and carries passengers in small two-person cabins.
The lift was built in 1961 by Pohlig AG, a company based in Cologne, and was the first gondola system of its kind in Hesse. Its construction came at a time when the Edersee area was being developed as a place for visitors.
The lift takes visitors straight up to Waldeck Castle, a medieval fortress overlooking the Edersee. Arriving at the top feels like stepping into a different world, leaving the lakeside behind and entering a site that has shaped the local identity for centuries.
Some cabins are fitted to carry bicycles, which makes it easy to continue exploring by bike after the ride. The lower station sits right on the lakeside promenade and is easy to find on foot.
The line runs on a steel cable 24 millimeters thick, supported by six towers along the slope. This original setup has been running for over 60 years without any major change to the core structure.
