Kellerwald-Edersee National Park, UNESCO World Heritage beech forest in Hesse, Germany

Kellerwald-Edersee National Park is a protected area with extensive beech forests, natural springs, and rocky outcrops near Edersee Lake in Hesse. The landscape consists of densely forested hills with streams and rock formations that create a varied terrain throughout the region.

The area became a national park in 2004 and received UNESCO World Heritage status in 2011 as part of Europe's ancient beech forest network. This recognition honored the value of forest stands that have remained undisturbed for centuries.

The place draws visitors who come to understand how forests function naturally without human interference, and walking through these woods shows what undisturbed woodland ecosystems look like. The trails help people observe how native trees, plants, and wildlife coexist in their natural patterns.

The park offers about 68 kilometers of marked hiking trails that connect various viewpoints and natural features and are easy to follow. The best time to visit is spring through autumn when trails are accessible and forest growth is full.

More than one thousand springs and small streams flow through the beech forests toward Edersee Lake, threading water throughout the park. This abundance of flowing water makes the forest come alive and creates small stream valleys and damp areas everywhere.
