Bad Wildungen, Spa town in Waldeck-Frankenberg, Germany.
Bad Wildungen is a spa town in Waldeck-Frankenberg, Hesse, nestled in wooded hills east of the Kellerwald range. The town displays half-timbered houses, health resorts, parks and wide avenues that follow the Wilde valley at around 900 feet (275 meters) elevation.
The settlement first appears in writing around the year 800 as villa Wildungun and received town rights in 1242 under Count Volkwin III. The prefix Bad was added in 1906 when the place gained official recognition as a spa town.
The name Wildungen comes from the river Wilde, which once attracted wild animals to its banks before the settlement grew around it. Today visitors notice locals and spa guests gathering at historic fountain pavilions to drink mineral water and chat.
Health clinics and spa houses spread across several neighborhoods, many within walking distance from the center. Visitors staying for treatment find guesthouses and hotels set up for therapeutic stays of several weeks.
A green bridge spans the Quellenring road and links two large park sections, letting strollers remain surrounded by greenery throughout. The spa park covers 50 hectares (123 acres) and is considered one of the largest continuous spa parks in Europe.
