Wildflecken, market municipality of Germany
Wildflecken is a market municipality in the Bad Kissingen district, comprising three villages and located within the Bavarian Rhon biosphere reserve. The landscape is characterized by forests and meadows, with open fields that shift in appearance with the seasons and weather.
The area received a large military training ground for the German Army in 1937, which was taken over by the United States after 1945. From 1945 to 1951 the site served as a camp for displaced persons before being used again as a military base.
The name Wildflecken reflects the untamed character of the Rhon region. Today the community embraces the motto 'wild and beautiful', which captures how residents and visitors experience the relationship between the surrounding landscape and daily rural life in this place.
The town is easily accessible and offers good opportunities for hiking and nature exploration in the Rhon region. There are numerous trails through forests and across open fields that can be explored on foot or by bicycle.
In the middle of the military training ground stands the pilgrimage church Maria Ehrenberg, one of the most significant Marian shrines in the Rhon, accessible only on certain days of the year. A 252-step staircase built in 1737 climbs 74 meters to the church and offers far-reaching views across the landscape.
