Wildflecken, market municipality of Germany
Wildflecken is a market municipality in the Bad Kissingen district of Bavaria, made up of three villages and sitting within the Rhön biosphere reserve. The surrounding land is a mix of forest, meadow, and open field, all of which change noticeably with the seasons.
In 1937 a large military training ground was built here for the German Army, and after the war it passed into the hands of the United States forces. Between 1945 and 1951 the site was used as a camp for displaced persons before returning to military use.
The name Wildflecken hints at the raw, untamed character of the Rhön region. Walking through the community today, the surrounding forests and open fields feel like a natural part of everyday life here.
The village sits in the heart of the Rhön and is a good starting point for walks through forests and across open fields. Paths in the area work well for both on foot and by bicycle, so it helps to come prepared for either.
Inside the military training ground stands the pilgrimage church Maria Ehrenberg, which can only be reached on certain days of the year. A staircase of 252 steps, built in 1737, leads up to the church and opens out to a wide view over the Rhön.
