Gärten der Welt, International garden complex in Marzahn-Hellersdorf, Germany
Gärten der Welt is an international garden complex in Marzahn-Hellersdorf that covers 43 hectares and includes ten traditional theme gardens and nine contemporary garden sections. Each area showcases different horticultural traditions from across continents, including Japanese, Korean, Balinese and Oriental styles.
The park opened on May 9, 1987 as part of the celebrations for Berlin's 750th anniversary and initially featured only a few gardens. The site underwent a major expansion in 2017 during the International Garden Exhibition, adding new theme areas and a cable car.
The Chinese Garden is named after Berlin's sister cities in Asia and features traditional pavilions with curved roofs and a moon bridge over the water. Visitors can observe tea ceremonies there and see how the layout follows principles of classical garden art from the Middle Kingdom.
The park opens daily from 9 AM until dusk, with exact closing times varying by season. Many areas are wheelchair accessible, and visitors can complete the entire circuit in about three to four hours.
The maze system combines different hedge labyrinths with paved pathways and offers multiple navigation options for visitors of all ages. Some sections follow historical European models, while others use modern geometric patterns.
