Garten des zusammenfließenden Wassers, Japanese garden in Marzahn district, Berlin, Germany
The Garden of Flowing Waters is a Japanese garden in Berlin's Marzahn district comprising three connected sections. Water streams, stone arrangements, and a central meditation pavilion called Nyo Suitei form the core elements.
The garden was created in 2003 as a partnership project between Berlin and Tokyo, supported by German and Japanese organizations. This collaboration brought the two cities together to build a space for cultural exchange through garden design.
The name reflects water movement that flows through the entire space and links different areas together. Visitors notice how this water guides the layout and shapes how stones and plants are positioned around it.
The garden is maintained daily with traditional raking of gravel patterns, and information panels explain plant species and garden elements throughout the grounds. The layout is easy to walk through at a relaxed pace and offers quiet spots to rest.
The garden features approximately 300 Augen gneiss stones carefully selected to tell stories according to Japanese garden design principles. Each stone was brought from a distance and placed with intention in the overall composition.
