Timmendorfer Strand, Administrative district in Ostholstein, Germany.
Timmendorfer Strand is a municipality and coastal spa in Ostholstein, Germany, extending along the Bay of Lübeck. The built-up area reaches from the sandy beach inland and includes residential neighborhoods, hotels, and promenade sections.
The village of Timmendorf was first mentioned in medieval times, but the development into a seaside resort began only in the late 19th century with the rise of coastal tourism. Between 1999 and 2011, the municipality implemented comprehensive flood protection measures to secure the shoreline against rising sea levels.
The name derives from the nearby village of Timmendorf, which existed long before the seaside resort developed and is now part of the municipality. Visitors can walk along the beach promenade and see local families using the coastal area for walks and leisure.
Access to the coast is available through several beach entry points, most of them designed without barriers. The promenade offers continuous paths for pedestrians and remains walkable in all weather conditions.
The flood protection walls along the promenade are partly glazed, allowing cafe guests to maintain direct views of the water while seated. This technical solution combines safety with visual connection and often goes unnoticed by many visitors.
