Bonn Minster, Romanesque cathedral in Bonn, Germany
This church is a Romanesque basilica with five towers in central Bonn, its tallest spire reaching about 87 meters above the ground. The building shows heavy stone walls, rounded arches, and small windows that allow soft light into the interior.
The current structure arose in the 11th century on an older memorial site from the 3rd century dedicated to two Roman officers. Over the following centuries, builders modified and expanded the building several times while keeping its Romanesque character.
The medieval cloister offers a quiet courtyard where visitors walk between columns and observe the simple arches that frame the open space. Stained glass windows in the choir date from the 1930s and show biblical scenes in a bold, modern style that stands apart from the old stone walls around them.
The church sits on Gangolfstraße 14 in central Bonn and can be reached on foot from many points in the city center. Visitors should keep in mind that access for tourists may be limited during religious services.
In the north transept, a medieval organ from 1230 sits on the east wall and ranks among the oldest in Germany. The mechanism and pipes have been renewed several times over the centuries, but the historic location and parts of the construction remain in place today.
