Ausweichsitz Nordrhein-Westfalen, Nuclear shelter in Urft, Germany.
The North Rhine-Westphalia alternate seat is an underground shelter beneath a residential house in Kall with approximately 1,000 square meters of space. The rooms are protected by 3 meter (10 feet) thick concrete walls and originally contained administrative offices, sleeping chambers, and communications centers.
The bunker was built in 1962 during the Cold War to protect state officials and maintain government operations. The facility was part of Germany's civil defense measures against potential nuclear threats.
The facility shows how officials and state employees were meant to shelter during emergencies. You can see the workstations, sleeping areas, and equipment that were planned for crisis situations.
Access to the facility is only possible with a guided tour, which can be booked through the official website. Visitors can also consider a combined tour with the Ahrtal government bunker nearby.
The bunker entrance is deliberately concealed inside a double garage of an ordinary residential house, making it invisible from the outside. The surface is covered with grass and trees, completely blending the structure into the surrounding landscape.
