Schierke is a mountain village in the Harz range at 614 meters elevation, nestled in the valley of the Cold Bode stream near the Brocken peak. The settlement has the typical layout of a mountain resort with accommodations, restaurants, and trailheads for outdoor activities.
The village began in 1506 as a sawmill and metalworking site that shaped its early economy. It later transformed into a mountain resort destination and was incorporated into Wernigerode municipality in 2009.
Goethe featured this village as the setting for Walpurgis Night in his drama Faust, linking it to German literary tradition. The connection has given the place a particular significance in visitors' imaginations when they explore the area.
The Brocken Railway provides train service between this village, Wernigerode, and the Brocken summit throughout the year. Numerous hiking trails and winter sports facilities offer activities suited to different seasons.
Schierker Feuerstein is a herbal liqueur from 1924 named after a distinctive red granite rock formation near the village. The drink was created by chemist Willy Drube and remains a local specialty.
